An online meeting with Elisabeta Petrescu, astronomer

on 19 May 2020

The Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) invites you on Friday, 22 May 2020, from 15:00, to attend an online meeting with Elisabeta Petrescu, astronomer at the The Astronomic Observatory Admiral Vasile Urseanu. The topic of the discussion will be the search for a planet with atmosphere and liquid water.

The event is organised by ESERO, a project of the European Space Agency (ESA) in collaboration with ROSA, and can be followed live on the ESERO Romania Facebook page.

When we will be able to travel among the stars, we will definitely spend holidays on other planets. For a hobby like fishing, first of all you need fish — that is, life. What are the conditions that a planet must meet in order to have a breathable atmosphere, a bearable temperature, liquid water and advanced life (in case we are not interested in fishing for bacteria)? The stars will give us the answer to these questions long before we can reach them. In the presentation, we will find out how we know whether a star has planets, how many types of planets there are, which is the goldilocks area, how we can detect the atmosphere and whether it can support life.

Elisabeta Petrescu has been a passionate astronomer at the Urseanu Astronomical Observatory since 2013. In 2017, she graduated master's studies at Măgurele in Atomic physics, elementary particles, astrophysics and applications. She is currently working on astronomy popularisation for the general public, studying asteroids and planetary defence.
