POST-QUANTUM CRYPTOGRAPHY-BASED PUBLIC KEY INFRASTRUCTURE IN FUTURE SPACE MISSIONS - EXPRO PLUS

on 29 July 2022

ESA Open Invitation to Tender: 1-11459
Open Date: 27/07/2022 17:17 CEST
Closing Date: 03/10/2022 13:00 CEST

International competition led by the United States National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) for the identification and establishment of post-quantum cryptographic (PQC) algorithms for public key infrastructure (asymmetric cryptography) is ongoing. It is quite likely that more than one algorithm will win this competition. In order to select the proper algorithms for their application on space missions security architecture it is essential to consider the general uniqueness of their context. This activity willanalyze the context for the most relevant security functions adopted by future space missions architectures, covering terrestrial and space mission elements and networks, as well as the winning algorithms, to select the most suitable for their adoption. The activity will build on results from GSP study on "Innovative Security Concepts, Mechanisms and Architectures for Future Space Missions". It included a study of generic security architectures for future space missions and identification of the relevant security functions. Furthermore, it will employ a previously developed flexible testbed for implementation and testing of the CCSDS Space Data Link Security (SDLS) Protocol and associated Extended Procedures. The activity encompasses the following tasks:- Identify design drivers for space-ground data link security and associated implementation on-ground and on-board- Analyze emerging PQC candidates and benchmark versus the design drivers identified in (1)- Extend a virtualised SDLS testbed with a representative mission control system and simulator in the loop with asymmetric cryptographic primitives and PKI capabilities- Perform benchmark, functional and performance testing on the testbed for the down-selected algorithms and capture any associated issues- Document findings, lessons learnt and future development needs
