The winners of the first National CanSat Competition Romania 2015

on 08 April 2015

Team Nexus Suceava, from the ‘Petru Rares’ National College and ‘Stefan cel Mare’ National College - Suceava, coordinated by Physics prof. Sutac Victor will represent Romania at the European CanSat competition, as a result of winning the national finals organised in Timisoara by ESERO Romania (The European Space Education Resource Office) during 3-4 April 2015. The European CanSat competition will be organised by the European Space Agency (ESA) near Lisbon, Portugal, from 25 to 28 June 2015.

Team NEXUS is composed of three students from ’Petru Rares’ National College and one student from ’Stefan cel Mare’ National College in Suceava, as follows: Tudor Andronic, Alexandru Hantescu and Emanuel Tabara, 9th grade students at the ’Petru Rares’ National College and Razvan Stefan Gearasim, 12th grade student at “Stefan cel Mare” National College.

The second place went to team Rocket Engineers, from the 'Ienachita Vacarescu' National College in Targoviste, coordinated by prof. State Gabriel and the third place was occupied by TOMIS team, from the 'Mircea cel Batran' National College in Constanta, coordinated by prof. Bararu Ion.

The participants responded to the challenge of including all the major subsystems of a satellite - such as power supply and communications - in a cansat, a simulation of an satellite integrated in volume and shape of a standard dose of refreshments. The launch of the projects of the eight finalist teams was held at the Timisoara Airport Utility (Cioca Aerodrom) from a height of 1000 meters using a motor deltaplane on 4-5 April, and the event was attended by Paxi, the mascot of the European Space Agency (ESA).

The primary mission was the same for all the participating teams: to build a CanSat able to measure the air temperature and air pressure as it falls back to Earth after the launch. The secondary mission was chosen by each participating team according to their preferences and ranged from the measurement of more advanced parameters, such as acceleration, GPS location or surrounding radiation levels, to performing a landing using a control mechanism to come down as close as possible to a target.

The National CanSat competition was organised this year for the first time by ESERO Romania — a project of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) and ESA — and was supported by the County Council of Timis, Timisoara Utility Airport, "ASALT" Sport Club, Timisoara West University, Autonomous Transport Administration Timisoara, CD Loga National College - Timisoara, Banat National College - Timisoara and Timis County School Inspectorate.

More details are available on the official website of ESERO Romania and on the website.

ESERO is a project initiated by ESA in order to use the fascination provided by the space field to encourage the teaching and learning of STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) in primary and secondary schools in Europe. Through this center, the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) and the European Space Agency (ESA) want to meet the specific educational needs of Romania, so that younger generations are encouraged to careers in STEM fields.
