on 12 February 2015

On Friday, 6 February 2015, Timisoara hosted the first meeting of the “Space Ambassadors”, event attended by Mr. Virgil Pop, ESERO Romania manager from the Romanian Space Agency, Mrs. Clara Cruz Niggebrugge, coordinator of the ESERO project at the European Space Agency level and the eight Space Ambassadors.

Associated with the European Space Education Resource Office România – (ESERO Romania), the Space Ambassadors represent each one of the eight development regions of Romania, taking care to spread across the country the resources and programs of ESERO Romania.

During the meeting the educational policies of the European Space Agency and the Romanian Space Agency in STEM were presented, along with the achievements of ESERO Romania and the way the Space Ambassadors understand to locally implement these activities in the future.

The main project of the European Space Agency (ESA) dedicated to support the primary and secondary education in Europe, ESERO, is using space as a creative and generous context for teaching and learning subjects that offer students knowledge and skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, encouraging them to chose future careers in these fields. ESERO is present in different Member States of ESA, in collaboration with national partners. ESERO Romania is coordinated by the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA).

ESERO Romania aims to involve teachers from across the country, and the idea to chose an "Ambassador of space" in each region - teachers with access to local networks of professors - was successfully implemented in the UK. The eight Romanian teachers - Space Ambassadors - collaborators with ESERO Romania are Prof. Victor Sutac (Region 1 Northeast), Prof. Ion Bararu (Region 2 Southeast ), Prof. Adrian Mehedinti (Region 3 South), Prof. Octavian Georgescu (Region 4 Southwest), Prof. Sandu Golcea (Region 5 West), Prof. Luminita Chicinas (Region 6 Northwest), Prof. Ana Naghi (Region 7 Centre) and Prof. Ioana Stoica (Region 8 Bucharest-Ilfov).
