on 04 February 2015

Update 5.03.2015: The team composed of the Romanian students Alex Danţis, Alex Dumitrescu and Anda Truta, together with Julian Laval from France, all of them studying at the UK’s University of Bristol, won the first prize of the annual ESA App Camp with their FarmIQ application. Details here.

Three Romanian students are members of the teams selected for the annual ESA App Camp, following an intense Appathon weekend held simultaneously at six ESA Business Incubation Centres and partner locations across Europe on 24–25 January. More than 170 participants from about 30 nations have competed to win a ticked for the ESA App Camp, which will take place in Barcelona from 25 February to 3 March.

The teams received the mission to develop mobile app concepts using Earth observation data and the power of the SAP Hana Cloud Platform to tackle some of the world’s greatest challenges.

After two days of intense work, all teams presented their app concepts in five-minute pitches to an expert jury on Sunday, who had the hard task to select a winning team in each country.

Team UK, composed of the Romanian students, Alex Dantis, Alex Dumitrescu and Anda Truta, together with Julian Laval from France, developed "CropAdviser", an app concept combining the power of SAP HANA, ESA Earth observation data, and other data sources for crop recommendations based on local conditions and optimising for yield and revenue. The other five winning teams developed various applications, such as “AGRAI” - to assist farmers (Team Finland), “Malevich” - a sales tool for energy providers (Team Germany), “SAMPEI” - a satellite assisted precision fishing app (Team Italy), “Penny Lane” - a space-based solution for global insect related forest damage (Team Netherlands) and “EcoFit” - to assist customers in their decision process regarding the best location for renewable energy sites (Team Portugal).

The winning teams, consisting of three to five developers, will now receive coaching to further develop their concepts, to be optimally prepared for Barcelona.

From 25 Feb to 3 March, the six teams will take part at the ESA App Camp. The overall winners will get the chance to present their apps on the SAP stage at the Mobile World Congress 2015 and will be awarded prizes including 5,000 Euro cash by top-level representatives from ESA and SAP.

The ESA App Camp is organised by Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen on behalf of the European Space Agency ESA and sponsored by SAP University Alliances. The local Appathons were realized with the support of local partners. Further information is available on

Romanian students were successful in the previous editions of the competition. The first prize of the third annual ESA App Camp, an event which took place at ESA’s ESRIN (the European Space Research Institute) centre in Frascati, Italy, from 8 - 15 September 2014, has been won by the team composed of Manuel Ciosici, a Romanian student established in Denmark, and three Danish students.
