Between 13 and 17 May 2021, five teams of high-school students from all over Romania will participate at the finals of the 7th National CanSat Competition. The event is organised by the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) through ESERO Romania, a joint project of the European Space Agency (ESA) and ROSA.

ESERO Romania – the European Space Education Resource Office – Romania is a project meant to increase students’ interest in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) by using space as an educational context.

The National CanSat Competition is organised with the support of Caransebeș “Banat” Airport, and the minisatellites launch will take place from this location on 14 May. The CanSat will be launched from an altitude of about one kilometre, will have to perform a mission and land safely.

The CanSat competition is a simulation of a satellite integrated in the volume and shape of a standard dose of a soft drink. The challenge for students is to include all major subsystems of a satellite — such as those for sensors, electricity and communications — into a 330 ml dose of a refreshment drink. Because of the pandemic context, this competition is organised in mixed format: students build their scientific projects and then send them to the jury and launch them. The data analysis as well as the scientific presentations will take place online.

Five teams with four to six students (over the age of 14 completed by 1 April 2021), coordinated by a teacher will join the activity mentioned above. The winning team will qualify directly for the European Finals, organised by the European Space Agency (ESA).

The teams selected for the finals are:

  • AS Aeolus, coordinator Tănăsescu Carmen Felicia,   “Andrei Saguna” National College, Brașov
  • Helios, coordinated by Corina Farkas, “Sabin Dragoi” Art College, Arad County
  • Tomis 7, coordinated by Băraru Ion,  “Mircea cel Bătrân” National College, Constanța
  • CoderDojo Oradea Space Robotics, coordinated by Daniel Erzse from CoderDojo Oradea, Bihor
  • Herotech, coordinated by Demco Andreea, “Octavian Goga” National College, Sibiu
