Students from Timisoara celebrated

Under the guidance of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) and the West University of Timisoara, 30 students of the "Constantin Diaconovici Loga" National College participated in the "Scoala Altfel" at a cans camp. The project was realized with the financial support of the Commission for Culture, Education, Youth and Sport of the Timis County Council, with logistics input from SIVECO Romania and the European Space Agency (ESA).

The camp hosted 30 students from IX, X and XI classes in a cabin located at 1300m altitude, to have a tenuous and clean atosphere. The students mounted a Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector telescope and raised from the ground a cans minisatellite for evidence of sensors and data transmission. The minisatellite was raised to a height of 200 meters using balloons filled with helium. The cans students integrated two temperature sensors, one pressure and measurement sensor and a sensor for measuring acceleration in 3D.

"The components of the minisatellite - motherboard, the Arduino processor and sensors - were received from ESA, and the children assembled and operated it and programmed the processor" says dr. Sandu Golcea, professor of physics at the Loga College, who initiated this scientific circle, after having participated, in Norway, on a cans course for teachers.

Students' results will be presented in an exhibition that will take place on 24 April. In the next step, the Golcea teacher aims to switch to the multiplication of standard installation cans and to adding of new sensors for the presence of ionizing radiation or to determine the Earth's magnetic field, so that each team of students will have their own sensors. The launch will be held on 1 Jun, in a camp in Poiana Mărului, provided by West University of Timisoara (UVT). The project as a whole is supported by Virgil Pop, Romanian Space Agency researcher and responsible for education and Prof. PhD. Mãdãlin Bunoiu, WUT Rector.
