The “Vianu Climate Detectives” and “Creative students’ laboratory ” teams from Romania are among the top five teams participating in this year’s edition of “Climate Detectives ” — an event organized by the European Space Agency (ESA). Along with three other teams from Malta, Italy and Greece, the members of these teams stood out among the 450 participants from the ESA Member States.

Although the Covid-19 pandemic caused the organizers to cancel the award for this year, the best teams were rewarded with special mentions.

The “Climate Detectives” project challenged competitors to identify a local climate problem, investigate it by using satellite images, take measurements on the ground, and then propose a way to monitor or mitigate it.

The “Vianu Climate Detectives” team from the Tudor Vianu National College of Computer Science Bucharest, coordinated by professor Ioana Stoica, developed a project that investigated the connection between deforestation and the disappearance of the four “classic” seasons. The “Creative students’ laboratory” team from the Gymnasium School Nr. 29 from Galați, coordinated by Alina Buduleanu, researched the effect of climate change on the Danube. The organizers also appreciated the team for the young age of its members — between 8 and 9 years. You can learn more about their project at this link.
