Training for teachers at Marisel, Cluj county, 4-7 September

ESERO Romania organises, from 4 to 7 September 2014, an introductory space activities and technologies course. The course will be held in Mărișel, Cluj County, at the location of the „Next Generation" Summer School.

Content: The course is aimed at using the space as an attractive context for teaching STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).

Participants will engage in topics such as the presentation of ESERO Romania, the educational resources of the European Space Agency, astronomy basics, artificial satellites of the Earth, space telecommunications basics, CanSat and practical activities

(reception of low frequency electromagnetic waves; the spectral analysis of received signals and interpretation of the obtained spectra; the voice signal transmission through elastic cords; construction of a sundial; determining the direction of the meridian and the time at which the sun crosses the meridian; scanning the sky with radio telescopes and elementary radio mapping of the visible sky; transmission of images and sound through radio at a great distance using high directivity antennas; using GPS receivers to determine the exact time and geographic coordinates; transformation of geographic coordinates expressed in decimal format into coordinates expressed in sexagesimal and vice versa; elementary mapping using GPS receivers; visit at the BITNET CCSS Scientific and Technological Research Center; reception of Earth images transmitted in real time, line by line, by NOAA meteorological satellites; astronomical observations depending on the weather).

Location: “Popasul Iancului” Hotel, Mărișel / Astronomical Observatory Mărișel, Cluj

Number of participants: 20

Material support: Organisers provide free tuition, accommodation in a double room and meals for three days - 4 to 7 September 2014 and possibly bus trip Marisel-Cluj and back. Transportation from the place of residence to Cluj and back is the responsibility of the participant.

Eligibility: The course is addressed to mathematics or physics teachers in upper or secondary schools in Romania.

Selection Criteria: Applicants will need to demonstrate their competence and the interest to disseminate the knowledge and experience gained in the course to other middle school or high school teachers and to a large number of students in some "teaching circles" (teacher's) excellence student groups or similar bodies to attract more students to the science and space technology field. Selection of participants will be done taking into consideration an equitable geographical distribution.

• Subject taught and the school
• The motivation to participate in maximum 300 words, including previous experience and how the candidate plans to pass on to other teachers and his students the knowledge gained in this course.

Candidates will be informed regarding the selection on 20 August 2014.
