The preselection for the National CanSat Competition - Romania 2020 has ended and ten teams have been selected to join the national phase, which will be held in Timisoara in April. The event is organised by ESERO Romania, a project of the European Space Agency (ESA) in collaboration with the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA).

CanSats are small ‘satellites’ that fit into the volume and shape of a soft drink can. The challenge students face is to include all major subsystems of a satellite, such as power supply and telecommunications, into a standard 330ml soft drink can. The CanSats are released from a rocket, balloon or drone at about 1km altitude. On its way back to the ground, the CanSat has to perform a certain mission and land safely on the ground.

The selection process is becoming increasingly difficult from year to year, due to the ever increasing quality of the candidate teams. The selected teams are as follows:

  • Team miniTehnicus, coordinated by Tănăsescu Carmen Felicia from "Andrei Saguna" National College, Brașov
  • Team Helios, coordinated by Corina Farkas from “Sabin Dragoi” Arts Highschool, Arad
  • Mikó20, coordinated by Mária Pető from “Székely Mikó” Highschool, Sf. Gheorghe,Covasna
  • Team Tomis 6, coordinated by Băraru Ion from “Mircea cel Bătrân” National College, Constanța
  • Team CoderDojo Oradea Space Robotics, coordinated by Daniel Erzse from CoderDojo Oradea, Bihor
  • Team GAGARIN, coordinated by Gabriel Anastasiu from “Alexandru cel Bun” National College, Gura Humorului and “Dragoș Vodă” National College, Câmpulung Moldovenesc, Suceava
  • Team Solaris, coordinated by Gabriel Teodorescu from “Emil Racoviță” National College, Cluj-Napoca, Cluj
  • Team Tellosat, coordinated by Renata Graziela Boar from “Constantin Diaconovici Loga” National College, Timisoara, Timiş
  • Team Carmen Sylva 4: Aspiration, coordinated by Serbu Florin Constantin from “Carmen Sylva” Highschool, Eforie Sud, Constanţa
  • Team RoboticUS, coordinated by Rotariu Ioan-Iulian from “Unirea” Railway Technical College, Iaşi.

The final of the CanSat National Competition 2020 edition will be held between April 22-26 in Timisoara and launching will take place at the Caransebeș aerodrome.

The 1st ranked team from each of the national competitions, along with the teams selected directly by ESA, will participate in the European launch campaign, which will take place from 22 to 27 June 2020. The location of the European CanSat Competition will be announced in the coming months.
