Astronomy and space science course for primary school teachers

on 19 October 2016

Between 31 October – 3 November 2016, the European Space Education Resource Office – Romania (ESERO Romania) and the Romanian Astronomical Society for Meteors (SARM) are organising a course on astronomy and space sciences, addressed to primary school teachers. The event will take place at Casa Matei, in Buzau, Romania.

The 4 days long course will be held by the representatives of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) and SARM during a 4 days long course, who will provide information on astronomy and space.

The course aims to offer participants the necessary knowledge to attract primary school pupils to STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) through the fascination brought on by the cosmic space. The participants will be studying, amongst others, the following:

- Sky-orientation;
- Stars and constellations;
- Astronomical instruments;
- Night-time observations;
- Space exploration matters, such as space missions, landing on a comet, life in space, how to become an astronaut.

Please note that the number of participants is limited and that the deadline to register is 23 October 2016. In order to participate, primary school teachers will have to prove their skills and interest in this area. The course is also addressed to teachers from children’s clubs or afterschools as long as they work with the same age groups.

Those who want to participate at the course should submit an online form  no later than 23 October, specifying the full name, the contact data, the unit where they teach and a 300 words letter detailing on the reason they want to enroll in the course. If applicable, the teachers should also provide details on their previous experience. They should also explain the way in which they intend to pass on the information learnt in the course to the students.

The expenses related to the class are funded by ESERO Romania, and the participants are requested to pay only the cost of transportation.

The results of the selection will be presented on 25 October. More details can be found on the ESERO Romania webpage.
