Finalists selected for the second National CanSat Competition - Romania 2016

on 18 February 2016

The preselection for the second edition of the National CanSat Competition - Romania 2016 has ended and nine teams have been selected to join the national phase, which will be held in Suceava between 21-24 April 2016. The event is organised by ESERO Romania, a project of the European Space Agency (ESA) in collaboration with the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA).

The coordinating teachers of the eight selected teams, joined by other eight teachers that applied, but did not qualify, were invited to participate to an introductory workshop that took place between 11-14 February 2016, at Gura Humorului, Suceava. The workshop covered subjects relevant to the competition such as sensor integration, communication data analysis, sensors programming.

CanSats are small ‘satellites’ that fit into the volume and shape of a soft drink can. The challenge students face is to include all major subsystems of a satellite, such as power supply and telecommunications, into a standard 330ml soft drink can. The CanSays are released from a rocket, balloon or drone at about 1km altitude. On its way back to the ground, the CanSat has to perform a certain mission and land safely on the ground.

The nine teams selected for the finals by ESERO Romania in collaboration with the Education Department of the European Space Agency (ESA) based on the quality of their project are:

  • Team RobotsFever from Ștefan Cel Mare Military National College - Câmpulung Moldovenesc, coordinated by Prof. Măgurean Marius-Daniel
  • Team CABSat from ”Alexandru Cel Bun” College - Gura Humorului, coordinated by Prof. Tănase Sorin-Iulian
  • Team TOMIS II from ”Mircea Cel Bătrân” National College - Constanța, coordinated by Prof. Băraru Ion
  • Team Carmen Sylva 2: Operation Eagle Drive from ”Carmen Sylva” Theoretical High School - Eforie Sud, coordinated by Prof. Serbu Florin Constantin
  • Team SAMDID from ”Ienăchiță Văcărescu” National College - Târgoviște, coordinated by Prof. State Gabriel
  • Team Astrobotic Spirit 002 from Carol I National College - Craiova, coordinated by Prof. Georgescu Octavian
  • Team LGM SAT 2 Phoenix from ”Grigore Moisil” Theoretical High School - Timișoara, coordinated by Prof. Oneci Cristian Traian and Prof. Cucu Dorina
  • Team Miko-CanSat from Szekely Miko Theoretical High School - Sf. Gheorghe, coordinated by Prof. Peto Maria
  • Team Caelum from ”Tudor Vianu” National College of Computer programming - București, coordinated by Prof. Gheorghe Dumitrică

The launching campaign of the National CanSat Competition will be held between 21-14 April 2016, in Suceava. The winner of the national competition will qualify directly for the finals of the European CanSat Competition, organised by ESA at the end of June 2016.
