Astronomy and space sciences introductory course for primary school teachers

The European Space Education Resource Office - Romania (ESERO Romania), in collaboration with the Romanian Society for Meteors and Astronomy (SARM), is organising during 14 -17 July 2015 an introductory course in astronomy and space sciences. The course is open to primary school teachers and will take place at the Runcu Stone Tourist Complex in Dambovita County.

Lecturers from ROSA and SARM will spend 4 days and 3 nights together with the students unraveling them the secrets of sky and space exploration.

Content: The course aims to give participants the necessary knowledge for attracting primary school pupils to STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) through the fascination of outer space. Astronomical topics such as orientation on the sky, stars and constellations, astronomical instruments and nocturnal observations and topics related to space exploration, such as space missions, landing on a comet, life in space or how to become astronaut will be discussed.

Support material: The organisers will provide tuition, accommodation in a double room and meals for free during 14-17 July 2015 and also the roundtrip transportation from Runcu to Targoviste and back by bus. The transport from hometown to Targoviste and back is the responsibility of the participant.

Eligibility: The course is dedicated to primary school teachers from Romania (grades I-IV) and teachers at children's clubs/afterschools (I-IV grades).

Selection criteria: Applicants will have to demonstrate competence and interest to disseminate the knowledge and experience gained in the course to their students and to other teachers from their hometown, to attract more students to astronomy, science space technology and STEM subjects.

The selection of participants will take into account a fair geographical distribution based on the 8 development regions of Romania.

In maximum 300 words they should describe their motivation, including previous experience (if there is any) and how the candidate is committed to pass on to students and colleagues the knowledge gained by attending this course.

Applicants will be informed on the selection results on 6 July 2015. The selected candidates who accepted the tender offer will have to sign an document for taking the responsibility to return the equivalent value of the course if they will not participate, the course being funded by ESERO Romania.
