Period: 18 September 2007 - 12 August 2009 (27 months)

Project director: dr. Ing. GOGU Radu Constantin

The project will facilitate the implementation of EU recommendations on water (Water Framework Directive 2000), such as the introduction of new standards, highlighting the problem areas in terms of quantity and quality, establishment of specific measures and programs to achieve the Water Framework Directive's objectives .

The maps obtained can be used in activities related to the sustainable management of groundwater resources, in planning and design, for all the responsible bodies in the management business and decision-making of any administration. Their primary purpose is to serve as a guideline for planning and development of policies and strategies for the protection and management of water resources.

Project objectives:

  • The project aims to develop a methodology for the evaluation and mapping of groundwater vulnerability complementary with rigorous delineation of the groundwater protection areas and development of prototype vulnerability maps for different aquifer systems.
  • Objectives of the ECAVAS project are corresponding to the main purpose of Program 4: "Partnerships in priority areas", being focused on the collaboration between different research institutions in Romania and business units, in order to improve compatibility with the European countries.
  • The specific objectives and project activities fall within the general line and it will be accomplished gradually, as follows: - idenitificarea existing international trends on the application of concepts and methods of evaluation and mapping of groundwater vulnerabilities; analysis of the community legislation in the field of research and the way of transposition into the Romanian space
  • conceptual foundation of an evaluation and mapping of groundwater vulnerabilities system: a comparative and critical analysis of the methods used in the European countries, the conceptual formulation of a methodology for Romania, including the use of spatial data management techniques
  • determining the structure of a methodological and functional model of evaluation and mapping of groundwater vulnerabilities - setting specific relational database structure, the procedures used to assess vulnerability and to represent the results obtained (intrinsic and / or specific vulnerability maps): identify the types of aquifers present in Romania, identifying existing data types (geological maps, hydro, land use, point and diffuse sources of pollution etc.), identification of procedures and GIS functions that can be applied to integrate multiple layers of information, identifying the most suitable ways of representing the determined spatial vulnerability classes.
  • integrating the flow mathematical modeling and transport of pollutants elements in methodology (fill the database with data from existing databases or obtained from the work field, development of hydrodynamic and transport conceptual models for different types of aquifers)
  • development of vulnerability maps for different types of aquifers by applying the methodology developed; the testing and validating of it on pilot areas.
  • dissemination and promotion of the proposed methodology to the interested bodies and the public

It was completed and handed over the Phase I of the project, which identified and presented international trends on the application of concepts and methods of evaluation and mapping of groundwater vulnerabilities, and elements of EU legislation in the field of research and how to transpose it in Romania.

In late May 2008 it will be delivered the phase 2 documentation, which will include a review of the studies and researches carried out in the aquifer vulnerability evaluation in Romania (so far) and a proposal for a unified methodology for evaluation and mapping of aquifer vulnerabilit, which should be applied by all stakeholders. This methodology will be tested in the next stages of the project, being improved over depending on concrete results, problems encountered etc.
