Open Call for 2018 CanSat National Competition

on 27 December 2017

ESERO Romania, a joint project of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), is organising the fourth edition of the National CanSat Competition. Secondary school students and teachers are invited to register for the preselection until 28 Januariy 2018.

The CanSat is a simulation of a satellite integrated in the volume and the shape of a standard can for soft drinks. The challenge of the competition is to integrate all the major satellite’s subsystems — such as energy supply and communications — in a soft drink can with a volume of 330 milliliters. The CanSat will be launched from an altitude of one kilometer with the help of a rocket, baloon, plane, helicopter or drone and it will have to perform a mission and land safely.

Mixed teams (female/male), made of four to six students, aged over 14 years old by 1 April 2018, and coordinated by a professor will send a sign-up form at CanSat at by 28 January 2018. The form will have details about the secondary mission, the way students will share responsibilities, as well as how they will promote the mission.

Teams will compete for eight places in the finals of the CanSat 2018 Competition. The selection will take into account an equal geographical distribution.

The launching campaign of the national competition will take place in the first half of the month of May. The winning team of the national competition will qualify directly in the finals of the European CanSat Competition, which will take place between 27 June and 1 July 2018 and will be organised by the European Space Agency.

Participating teams shall take into account the national competition rules available here and then the European rules available on the ESA website. The official language of the competition will be English.

Coordinating teachers of the eight selected teams, as well as other teachers who will have signed up for the competition without being selected will be invited to take part at an introductory workshop, which will take place between 8 and 11 February 2018, at Gura Humorului, Suceava county. The training will approach topics such as sensor integration, communications signal analysis, data communication and processing, introduction to sensor programming etc.

Should any teacher participated at a CanSat or AstroPi training before, s/he will not be invited to attend this session.
